About the Festival:Since 2018, the Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival has been dedicated to presenting innovative works that expand the possibilities of experimental cinema and contemporary moving image practices. As Turkey’s first international festival devoted exclusively to experimental cinema, the festival brings together artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, and audiences around diverse approaches to image, sound, time, materiality, and technology. The festival is founded on the belief that experimental cinema is not a fixed genre, but an evolving field of artistic inquiry. Through an international competition, curated screenings, retrospectives, audiovisual performances, and educational programmes, the festival seeks to create new ways of experiencing and understanding moving image practices.
Awards:
- The Jellyfish Award: The festival’s highest distinction, presented to one selected work across all competition categories, regardless of format or duration. This award embodies fluidity, transformation, and the spirit of experimentation in cinema.
- Jury Awards: The Jury may recognize outstanding works across all categories through special mentions and awards. Possible recognitions include, but are not limited to: Award for Artistic Vision, Award for Innovation in Form, Award for Image and Sound, Award for Critical Engagement, and Award for Emerging Voice.
Accepted Genres:Experimental Feature, Experimental Short, Experimental Non-Fiction (Documentary), Experimental Animation, First Experiment, Music & Performance Films, and National Submission (Turkey).
Running Time:Experimental Feature: 40 minutes or longer / Experimental Short, Documentary, and Animation: Less than 40 minutes / Other Categories (First Experiment, Music & Performance, National Submission): No running time restrictions.
Language & Subtitles: All works must include English subtitle files. Even for English-language films, English subtitles or closed captions are required to ensure accessibility and meet exhibition standards.
Completion Date:Works completed on or after January 1, 2025.
Submission Deadline: September 21, 2026
Additional Information:
- Online Availability: Works that have been made publicly available online (via streaming platforms or video-sharing websites) are not eligible.
- AI Usage: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted; however, all submissions are evaluated based on artistic vision, conceptual integrity, and contribution to moving image practices, rather than the technology employed.
- Work-in-Progress: Work-in-progress submissions are accepted, provided the final version is completed and delivered by the festival’s specified deadline.
- Premiere Status: World, international, or regional premiere status is not required, though preference may be given to works with limited prior public exposure.
